Back To School: 10 Things I'd Tell My 15 Year Old Self.

So today, 16th August 2016 my son starts P1. (First year of formal education here in Scotland) He is really excited, and so am I.. but it is still a very emotional day for both of us... new territory.

So I thought in celebration I would share with you 10 things I would tell my younger self.. Things I wish I had realised in school, despite my Mum's best efforts to tell me. I was so stubborn!

1. Those Bitches Don't Matter
Seriously the minute I left high school I forgot about them, after years of thinking their opinion of me meant everything - I realised it didn't mean a thing.. I didn't care. If only I had realised that 6 years previously!

2. You Don't Need To Decide What You Want To Be
There is so much pressure at age 13-17 to pick the right subjects so you can be what you want to be when you are older. Guess what? I'm 25 and have only just decided now what I want to commit to. There is no rush, and do not do something because you are good at it, do it because you enjoy it!

3. Don't Be Awkward on Purpose
I used to love sticking out, in some ways I still do, but I have toned it down A LOT. Learn when you want to stand out, and make it for the correct reasons.

4. No One Likes A Slut
Yup I said it. 15 year old me was a tramp. I wish I could have learned that less is more, and you don't need to put yourself into those situations for people to like you - just let them get to know the real you. You are worth more than that.

5. Edward Is Bae
Back in 2004/2005 very few people had heard of Twilight - or Edward Cullen. At 14 he was my first love. I must have read those books on repeat until the first movie came out and ruined them all. You enjoy Edward while you have him, not ruined and perfect. My first love. He is way better than any boy you know just now anyways. (just maybe don't get a Twilight tattoo on your back, its kinda lame now, even if you did get it before the movies...)

6. You Are Not Fat
I spent hours staring into a mirror telling my skinny ass it was fat. You are not. You have the best body you ever will right now, so flipping enjoy it. Buy a crop top and hang your flat perfectly unmarked stomach out - cause that will go to shit at age 20.

7. Take A Gap Year
Sure the sound of uni is great, but you aren't ready and even you know that. Go explore, go travelling. GO OUTSIDE. Seriously teen me hated fresh air of any type.

8. MAKEUP!!! JUST BUY SOME.
Seriously I think I owned 10 things in total between age 12-22. Right now you think its expensive and pointless. It isn't pointless, you just don't know how to wear it yet. Learn, it'll be worth it. Oh and bright blue eyeliner? not the best look.

9. Don't Stop Obsessing Over Shoes.
25 year old Erin cannot afford £100 shoes every month, but 18 year old me can. Don't ever say no to shoes, especially Irregular Choice. They ARE an investment, because they make every outfit now, and yes, they are all still totally cute. Well done Erin, good shoe choices.

10. Your Mum Loves You, and is just Scared.
Right now you constantly say "I love my mum, I just don't like her" she annoys every bone in your body. But she does it because she loves you. She misses spending time with you. And PLEASE open your eyes and realise it. At age 20 she is going to upset you in a way you have never been before, but by age 22 you will realise how right she was, and how she just didn't want you to make the same mistakes she did - and that doesn't mean she would change what she did - it just means she wishes we had more time. Both of us. She loves you, and she will be your best friend, just take some time to appreciate all she has done for you.

Which things would you tell your younger self? Let me know in the comments below :)

  1. I actually can't quite believe it's been so long since high school. Some good advice here, I remember being obsessed with turquoise virgin vie mascara and eyeliner but no other make up on my face - I looked so bizzare! I think I was 20 before I bought a blusher so thank goodness for blogs and vlogs leading my makeup education!

I'd tell myself all the high school drama will be forgotten the minute everyone leaves so don't stress over it and that obsessively straightening your hair isn't probably the best for it!

Oh, and I hope your wee one has a good first day :)

  2. I needed to listen to so many of these. I also needed to realize that just because you can't obviously see my makeup doesn't mean it isn't there. Natural is better. Also, my hair doesn't have to be so straight it sticks to my head haha! What a time!

  5. I wish I was 14-15 now and read this post. I can see myself in this, especially with my mom. I remember the feel like I didn't need her, like she was so annoying in my life, but now? She's my best friend and I couldn't imagined my life without her. Back at the time, I wish I was nicer to her.

  7. Great post and advice for your younger self. Seen your snaps with little AJ going to school, he looks so cute in his uniform! There is definitely too much pressure put on youngsters to know what they wanna do when they're older. I'm 25 and still don't know what I wanna do when I'm older!! I thought I was huge back then, but now I look back and think, "wish I could have that body now"! Haha :) by the way I have to see that tattoo!! Made me chuckle reading that and YES Edward is AMAZING!!! But that's from seeing the films.

    Love Hannah xx

  9. Yes, yes, yes to most of these! I go to an all girl school and wow, some can be extremely mean. I was the awkward kid who plays lots of sports and was dressed by my mum so you can imagine how terrible I looked. High school was tough but nothing of it mattered now.
