My Love of House Plants (And Care Instructions)

Sometimes you have to write about something different...

The love of house plants is REAL. Seriously I am a tad obsessed. My house is a little more jungle than a house. But they just bring so much joy to a room, especially when you have grown them and cared for them. Some of mine have even produced more plants *so cool*. So I thought I would take the time to show you my little collection, hoping to encourage you to try some for yourself. I promise you will not be disappointed.

"Cylindrical Snake Plant"
More information & Purchase here

Light: Moderate - bright.
Water: Allow the soil to dry out before watering, then water thoroughly and allow to drain freely. Do not allow the plant to sit in water as this will cause root rot.
Temperature:  15-23°C
Air Purifying: Sansevieria filter airborne toxins.
Height and Growth Rate: Ultimate height 75-100cm. Slow growing.
Toxicity: Mildly toxic if eaten. Keep away from children and animals.

This was my first Lidl purchase. £2.99 for a snake plant of this height was too good to leave behind. It desperately needed to be repotted though - but since I have, it seems to be flourishing in my sunny kitchen. Low maintenance, and super cute.

The second of my Lidl finds. £2.99, SUCH a good price for the size, I couldn't say no. This is newest to my little collection too. In need of a repotting, but this plant pot is my favourite. From Monki the nude bodies is such a cool statement.

Temperature: 16-24°c
Care tips: Cut back by removing the top of the plant if it grows too tall.
Air Purifying: This plant filters airborne toxins
Height and Growth Rate: Ultimate height 2.5-3m but very slow-growing and easily cut back.
Toxicity: The sap is toxic to animals. It is not considered poisonous to humans but should not be ingested.

This was actually my first house plant. Straight from IKEA this was SO small when I got it. It's been repotted twice now, and makes my Mum furious because we both got one at the same time - and hers is still TEENY. Definitely low maintainance and thrives in sunlight - I love it. This pot was from TK Maxx, their range is SO good for pots!

Light: Low - Moderate
Water: Keep the soil moist at all times. Water when the surface becomes slightly dry, but don't over-do it.
Temperature: 16-24°c
Humidity: These ferns prefer higher humidity levels where possible.
Height and Growth Rate: Ultimate height 0.5-1m. Fast-growing.

This was the first of my Tesco £2.50 plants. This was small when I first got it, it outgrew its small pot. I got this stunning green pot from B&Q and I think it looks SO cute in it. Right now mine isn't in the best condition, but they come back strong with a little love and attention.

"String of Pearls"

Light: Bright, indirect light. Some morning or late afternoon sun would be a bonus.
Water: Senecio is very drought tolerant, storing water in their leaves. Allow the soil to dry out between watering. Do not over-water or allow the plants to sit in water.
Temperature: 21-24°C is perfect in summer. Cooler winter temperatures around 13-16°C will help to maintain good plant health and encourage blooming.
Care Tips: Simply trim to the desired length if they become too long or straggly.
Height and Growth Rate: Ultimate height/length 1m. Fast-growing.
Toxicity: Mildly toxic if eaten. Keep away from children and animals.

This one was bought SO small, really just two teeny growths in a pot from Dobbies. £2.99. But it was my first project. I was determined to grow it as big as I could, and it has grown all this length in the space of two months - and it isn't stopping anytime soon. I love it. SO unique, I love the way it looks on a shelf. I cannot wait to see how this looks by next year now too!

"Zebra Plant"

Light: Diffused Light, Direct sunlight will fade leaves.
Water: Calathea must be kept in damp soil at all times, but definitely do not allow the plant to sit in water or in very wet soil. Think little and often as a watering policy.
Temperature: 18-23°c
Humidity: High humidity levels are a must. Pop it in the shower room from time to time to give an extra boost.
Height and Growth Rate: Ultimate height 80-100cm.

I LOVE how this one looks and feels. It's SO vibrant, I love the pattern. The tips of my leaves aren't in the best condition, but I just don't know how to improve them, which is upsetting - but overall it's fine to care for - and worth the effort. (Pot is from TK Maxx).

"Chinese Money Plant"

Light: Moderate - bright.
Water: Water when the soil has begun to dry out.  the leaves will begin to droop if the plant needs to be watered. Don’t let the plant sit in water.
Temperature: 16-24°c
Humidity: Pilea peperomioides need fairly high humidity levels.
Height and Growth Rate: Ultimate height 25-30cm and fast-growing.

My favourite, without a doubt. I saw one of these on placement a few months ago and knew I just had to have one. I LOVE the long stems and round leaves. They are beautiful. They grown beautifully too, you can really see them getting bigger. I have also gained offspring from mine, repotting by itself and it's doing well too. I would happily have a house full of these, definitely worth getting your hands on! (Pink pot is from Dobbies!)

Next on my list is the Ceropegia woodii.. or String of Hearts. But then I am a sucker for a plant so I will probably have a good few more too. Do you have any of these? What is your favourite house plant? Let me know - I could talk about them all day!
